After approving Finland's NATO membership, Turkey was putting Sweden's membership approval on hold. Sweden's membership approval was on the agenda during the F-16 fighter jet purchases with the USA. It was noted that the USA was waiting for Sweden's membership approval for the sale of F-16s.
Ankara had previously said that it would not approve the membership of Finland and Sweden, and that these two countries could not become members of NATO unless they took the necessary steps against terrorism and returned the requested names.
Especially the Quran burning actions carried out in Sweden were met with a harsh reaction by Ankara. However, the vetoes regarding NATO membership of first Finland and then Sweden were lifted one after the other. Both countries made new regulations in terrorism laws during the NATO membership process, but they have not extradited any terrorist criminals to Turkey.
